CertSentinel
Monitor Windows certificates locally and get notified before important certificates expire.
This is currently a concept, not downloadable software.
The proposal
The problem
A familiar source of friction.
Certificates in the Windows Certificate Store can approach expiry without a clear reminder. Repeatedly checking dates by hand makes it easy to overlook a certificate that needs attention.
The proposed solution
A focused way forward.
Know which Windows certificates are about to expire before they become a problem. CertSentinel is a proposed lightweight, local-first Windows utility for certificate expiry awareness and inventory. V1 would scan CurrentUser\My and, where permissions allow, LocalMachine\My, with a manual Scan now action and no cloud account required. The inventory would show subject or friendly name where available, issuer, thumbprint, store/location, Not Before, Not After, days remaining and whether a private key is present. Configurable expiry thresholds would classify certificates as Healthy, Warning, Critical or Expired, with Windows alerts on meaningful state transitions, ignore controls and lightweight local history. This is a monitoring concept, not automatic certificate lifecycle management: it would not request, renew, install or delete certificates, change bindings or identify dependent applications and services. It would not provide full PKI health, universal trust-chain or revocation validation, remote fleet monitoring or guaranteed outage prevention. The ConceptForge video uses a fully synthetic certificate scenario to visualize the proposal, not shipping functionality; CertSentinel does not renew or install the replacement shown.
Concept capabilities
What this idea could help with.
- Scan supported Current User and Local Machine certificate stores
- See exact expiry dates and days remaining
- Configure Healthy, Warning, Critical and Expired thresholds
- Receive Windows alerts on meaningful expiry state transitions
- Ignore intentionally irrelevant certificates to focus on important ones
- Keep local history of newly observed, removed and state-changed certificates
