Excel Link Rewriter
Scan Excel workbooks for old external paths, preview safe replacements, rewrite supported links, and flag anything uncertain for manual review.
This is currently a concept, not downloadable software.
The proposal
The problem
A familiar source of friction.
After file-server, folder, OneDrive, SharePoint or other storage migrations, many Excel workbooks still reference old file and folder locations. Finding and updating those references by hand is slow, and uncertain dependencies need careful review.
The proposed solution
A focused way forward.
A proposed Windows utility for safe automation: select a folder, scan .xlsx and .xlsm workbooks, map old path prefixes to new ones, preview supported rewrites, produce safe output while preserving originals, then verify the results. V1 would only rewrite deterministic supported references: external workbook references, hyperlinks, defined names containing supported external references, and supported Open XML external-link or relationship targets. Unsupported or ambiguous findings would remain untouched as Manual Review. Automatic repair of arbitrary VBA, dynamically generated paths, Power Query logic, ODBC/OLE DB connection strings, Data Model or Power Pivot dependencies, add-ins, password-protected or corrupt workbooks, and legacy .xls files is outside V1 scope. The concept video visualizes the proposal; it does not demonstrate shipping software.
Concept capabilities
What this idea could help with.
- Batch scan .xlsx and .xlsm workbooks in a migration folder
- Map old path prefixes to new paths for supported references
- Preview exactly which references can be safely rewritten
- Leave uncertain or unsupported findings untouched for Manual Review
- Produce safe rewritten output while preserving originals
- Rescan output to verify supported references changed as intended
